Murder Party (2007)

Murder Party (2007)
Member Rating:
A loser finds out the hard way there are worse things than spending another night at home in this horror comedy from first-time director Jeremy Saulnier. Christopher (Chris Sharp) is a nebbish who can't get any respect at work, couldn't get a date if his life depended on it, and has practically no social life. Christopher figures he's going to be stuck at home on Halloween until he finds an invitation for a "murder party" on the sidewalk; expecting a costume party with fun and games, he slaps together a cardboard "suit of armor" and shows up for the festivities. The bash is being thrown by a group of bohemian artists who are rather surprised Christopher has shown up -- he's the only stranger to take the bait and arrive for their party, in which their guest-of-honor is actually going to be killed in the name of creativity (and impressing a jaded patron who finances their projects). Before long, Christopher begins to realize what's going on, and struggles to find a way out of the warehouse where the party is being held, while the artists begin to turn on one another and the blood starts to flow. Murder Party won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Don't take this movie seriously in any way and then you might enjoy it. There are some twisted moments in this movie that I probably shouldn't be laughing at. But I do; I just can't help it. It is more comedy than horror, for sure... Although the characters were unrealistic, the actors did a great job twisting them into something likeable. You may hate it, you may love it. I doub't there is middle ground with this one.

I began watching this film intending to count the hack plot devices and script cliches. 5 minutes into it I was lost in what turned out to be a wry, witty comic horror gem. The premise is surprisingly fresh & slightly farcical. Christopher Hawley (played by Chris Sharp) throws together a costume, & heads for what he thinks is a simple Hallows Eve shindig. Instead he finds himself the center of a bizarre plot in which a group of hack artists plan to kill him in the name of art. Bungling chases, attempted murder, actual murder, sex, drugs, rock n' roll, & accidental maiming by fire are just a few of the mishaps and perpetrations which follow. This is offbeat, dark comedy at it's finest. The effects were fantastic, the script was witty and engaging & the story unfolded and progressed at a pleasing clip. The acting, usually the bane of the indie movie, is fantastic. This award-winning movie is 90 minutes well-spent. It isn't just a good indie movie. It's a good movie PERIOD.

I'm going to have to agree with a couple of the previous reviews. This movie is definitely aimed at a specific audience, i.e. not for everyone, but anyone who likes horror-comedy or just well done horror will like the quirky plot and the unexpected twists. I watched it a second time the next day, and I liked it even more because, after knowing the ending, I noticed little details/cues I missed the first time. I can't believe how well done it is after watching the "Extreme Truth" feature about how they made this movie. The DVD even includes a pumpkin bread recipe!
