More like a series of MTV sequences than a long-term narration, this super-thin story line focuses on a kidnapped singer (Diane Lane) and her ex-boyfriend (Michael Pare) who goes forth to save her through rainy streets, the roar of elevated subways, several alleys, and the usual warehouses. Each thrust of the story has rock music that follows along with the narration. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I have loved SOF since 1984. It’s a string of visually fantastic but logical vignettes tying together a terrific soundtrack, or visa versa. The opening and closing scenes are inspiring music videos that capture everything that is exciting about rock and roll, bookends for a fun "good triumphs over evil" fantasy. The wonderfully atmospheric visuals have a dreamlike quality capturing “another time and another place”. The story, and every character, is intentionally clichéd in the most good natured way. The likable and competent cast expresses each well-drawn caricature to bring them believably alive. No question the cast had a terrific time inhabiting their clichéd personas. In a world gone crazy, SOF is a go-with-the-flow experience, a fun, guilty pleasure, with a heart-of-gold outlook popping out all over the place.

This is one of my favorites of all time, terrifically under-rated. A mix of 50's 60's 70's genres of music, fashion with a done-to-death, predictable plot that works... again. Bad guys in black, good guy the lone, misunderstood Badass Tom Cody (Michael Paré) with a heart of gold, the loner who blows in & blows out of The Battery like the masked man sans mask to rescue the girl. Plenty of no-name actors in this film who made it very big later. Ry Cooter's music is great. Innovative editing, and Diane Lane sizzles. THAT alone is worth the price of admission. If you're a realist, don't rent this film. If you like to 'go with it' on a very very visually pleasing, Walter Hill tableau- you will NOT be disappointed.
