This is an art film. In the tradition of art cinema, the entertainment value is secondary. Almost every craft you can imagine is portrayed in this film. Knitting, embroidery, drawing, painting, doll houses... It is a beautiful film that is easy on the eyes, but the plot is difficult to follow. As near as I could tell, it appears the two sisters lost their mother and their true love during the war. The film attempts to shows them finally coming to terms with their losses in old age. The music is fantastic, lots of unexpected key shifts and time changes. We enjoyed it, but even my wife, who is Japanese, didn't really "get it" the first time through. It requires a lot of imagination on the part of the viewer, as well as an appreciation for the creative process. If you liked All About Lily Chou-chou, you will probably like Wool 100%. If you didn't like Lily Chou-chou, Wool is even more disjointed and difficult to follow. Rent it only if you like art cinema!
