Member Rating:
Every historian knows the tale of the Pilgrim's journey to the New World - but where does legend start and reality begin? In this expansive, three-hour look at the arduous voyage to a new land, the award-winning filmmakers of A&E attempt to deliver the final word on the historical trek that would forever change the face of history. Scholastic research combines with historical re-enactments to truly draw the viewer in as the popular myths promoted in elementary school classrooms are methodically disproved and the true tale comes to life more vividly than ever thought possible. The passengers aboard the Scrooby, the Leiden, and the Plymouth gradually dwindle in numbers as they sail across unfamiliar waters and land on strange shores, only to find that life in their new surroundings is equally as unforgiving. After dining alongside Squanto and Samoset at the historic first Thanksgiving, viewers are afforded the opportunity to explore just how that historical meal marked the beginning of a remarkable, and sometimes tragic, new era. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I enjoyed this documentary as it had a lot more detail than I expected. The descriptions of what the Pilgrims had to go through to get to the New World was harrowing and often disturbing but, for the most part, historically accurate. The film gives details of names and personalities of many who were on board the Mayflower and also names of some of the Native Americans that the Pilgrims encountered when they reached the New World. Some artistic license is used to tell the story from the perspective of the Pilgrim women and the Native Americans as there are no actual written accounts by these groups from the period. Even this is backed up by experts on this time in history, however, and seems feasible. A good description is given about what may have actually happened at the first Thanksgiving. Also includes a Making Of the film and outtakes. Overall very educational and enjoyable.

I found this account of the Pilgrims' story very interesting and informative. It was very helpful learning about the events that led up to the crossing all the way through the first Thanksgiving celebration. The actors vividly brought to life the hardships the Pilgrims endured on the ship, as well as arriving in November in New England and having to put up shelters in the winter. It really made me appreciate the freedom of religion we have after watching what they went through in England, and the overwhelming sacrifices they made to find freedom in America.

Great men and women sacrificed all they had in order to have freedom of religion in the New World, our incredible United States of America. Excellent video with insightful information! God bless the U.S.A.
