Woody Allen's tenth film as writer/director, Stardust Memories opens with a scene reminiscent of the opening of 8 1/2 and continues to use that film for inspiration. Sandy Bates (Allen) sits in a train at a train station, the car filled with very unhappy looking people. In a train on another set of tracks, Bates sees a wonderful party going on. A beautiful woman blows him a kiss as the happy train pulls out of the station. Bates is a famous film director who has been invited to attend a festival of his work being held at the Stardust hotel. He attends the event, but is ceaselessly harassed by fans who accost him and repel him in equal measure. While consistently hearing the complaints from fans, critics, and even space aliens that his earlier comedies are superior to his dramatic work, Bates juggles a trio of women in his private life. His encounters during the course of the retrospective force Bates to take a long look at himself. Sharon Stone makes one of her first film appearances as the woman who blows Sandy a kiss. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

It's hard to believe this film is 25 yrs old. What a wonderful film - and it all still holds up because nothing has changed...all these years later. That aside, it's all about Woody in the aviator shades and the "big wet kiss" in the end.

This film is SO much better than Fellini's "8 1/2" which is its inspiration. Unlike "8 1/2", "Stardust Memories" actually amuses and has an easy-to-follow narrative. Full of creative sight gags, it contains many allusions to "8 1/2", dished up with that wonderful Woody Allen humor/angst. One has merely to compare Fellini's rocket ship stage to Woody Allen's garbage dump scene for a glimpse into Allen's crazy mindset. This is a wonderful comedy purporting to be serious (or perhaps it is a serious film that draws laughs). There are too many similarities between the two films to mention; I suggest watching "8 1/2" first (slogging through it, if you must), then viewing it again with the commentary, and finally renting "Stardust Memories" so as to appreciate the comparisons and Woody Allen's humor all the more fully. The only unintentionally sad part of "Stardust Memories" is when Allen's character denies having an infatuation with his girlfriend's 14-year-old female relative. Yikes!

I had a great time watching this. I know that it is considered one of Allen's lesser works but I cannot understand why. No doubt, some people may find the narrative challenging, but it is definitely there. I think that maybe this movie either confuses people because they can't follow it, or it offends them because they actually do prefer Allen's early, funny films. I don't fall into either category and, as such, I really enjoyed the movie.
