Stunningly photographed story of a young boy growing up and surviving in spite of being surrounded by adults who are really messed up. Young Kodi Smit-McPhee is a revelation as the boy. Martin Csokas is outstanding as his father's best friend. The continually unfolding dysfunction with which the boy has to face gets a little overwhelming at times (you'll keep thinking, "That poor kid. That poor kid!!!"). But ultimately this is a story of hope and life springing forth from great melancholy. An evocative and memorable film.

I didn't think this was a very interesting movie at all but I rented it so I finished it. Pretty boring actually--seen one of these you've seen them all. Typical disfunctional family movie. Don't care to see again.
