Sebastiane (1976)

Sebastiane (1976)
Member Rating:
Filmed entirely in vulgar Latin, this experimental film recounts the life of Sebastiane, a puritanical but beautiful Christian soldier in the Roman Imperial troops who is martyred when he refuses the homosexual advances of his pagan captain. When this film was released, it was the only English-made film to have required English subtitles, and it is an early film by the noted experimental and outspokenly homosexual director Derek Jarman, who died in 1994. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

I am a definite movie freak but this was just awful, no anount of naked men could make this piece of crap anything to watch, bad acting, no plot line, imagery that any first year film student could see right through and costumes borrowed from a junior high drama department. Don't waste your time

3/26/2005 Wish I had read the writer/Director's brief bio before I watched the movie. I'm sure there must be a point to it but I missed it. Nodded at some points. Perhaps ahead of it's time.

You need more than a bunch of half naked and totally naked men running around to make a movie. This movie was noticably low budget. The language is "vulgar" latin, so be prepared to read English subtitles the entire time. You may wear-out the fast forward button on your remote...don't be afraid to use it, because there are very few "good" parts. Most of the acting was bad, some of it was mediocre. There were a few parts of the movie (very few parts) that were erotic. The beginning of the movie was really corny (some orgy/party going on). Sebastiane doesn't want to take part in the homosexual behavior like the other men, so they kill him because of it. Many parts of the movie are slow moving and tedious.
