This film was truly an epic of enormous proportions..although the film print was a bit hazy at times, the scenery and acting were superb..I can't imagine how they filmed this picture..was it on site? It all looked so real and convincing...it was great to see some of these familiar faces when they were so young, eg. James Robertson Justice and John Mills..all in all a great film even though it ends in tragedy..4 stars!!

Though mostly nenowned for its comedies, Ealing Studios nonetheless forged into historical drama with this epic of Britain's attempt to reach the South Pole ahead of a Norwegian team. Considering when it was made, the film makes good use of its exterior shots (mainly filmed in Norway or Finland, I believe) but the studio interiors will fool no one. The pacing is a bit stately (i.e. slow) but the performances are quite good. Unfortunately, this DVD transfer is horrible - dirty print, very poor color transfer, etc, and probably from an old tape used for VHS copies. A good copy is available from Amazon UK if you have a machine that plays that region.
