The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)
Member Rating:
This film from director Harold Young is the second big-screen adaptation of Baroness Emmuska Orczy's 1905 novel The Scarlet Pimpernel. Leslie Howard stars as Sir Percy Blakeney, a British aristocrat who rescues innocent victims of the French Revolution under the guise of The Scarlet Pimpernel while maintaining the identity of a foppish dandy by day. Even his wife, Lady Marguerite Blakeney (Merle Oberon), is unaware of Percy's heroic alter-ego as he and his band of likeminded masked men save countless people from the guillotine. Perhaps the most famous adaptation of the classic book, The Scarlet Pimpernel would later be lampooned in 1966's Don't Lose Your Head. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Note the "Buy this DVD!" price: $4.99. This is a very poorly made dvd; looks like a transfer from vhs. No captions. Looks like public domain material. Sad, really. A pretty good movie based on a really fun book. Read it!

If you love old, black-and-white films, then this version of The Scarlet Pimpernel can't disappoint. Ever since learning that Leslie Howard (Gone With the Wind) had done a version, I knew that he would be the perfect Sir Percy Blakeney. He is effete, inane and annoying, but also convincingly plays the role of the dashing Scarlet Pimpernel. Merle Oberon is gorgeous and the costumes sumptuous. What else could one ask for? Well, having read the book, I have to say that character development is a little lacking in the movie, and the actual character of the Scarlet Pimpernel does not get much screen time. But it isn't a long movie and, though simplified, the important elements of the story are all there. I enjoyed this much more than the Jane Seymour version, although I do love Jane Seymour, too.
