Based on a gritty, semi-autobiographical novel by author Kim Wozencraft, this crime thriller was adapted for the screen by noir novelist Pete Dexter and marked the directorial debut of producer Lili Fini Zanuck. Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Kristen Cates, a rookie police officer recruited to partner with Jim Raynor (Jason Patric), an undercover Texas cop trying to infiltrate the criminal ring of major drug dealer Will Gaines (Gregg Allman) in the 1970s. What Kristen isn't told is that, as part of his deep cover masquerade, Jim must take drugs in order to be convincing and, unsurprisingly, has become an addict. Although this dangerous practice is not acceptable police procedure, Jim and Kristen's zealous superiors Larry Dodd (Sam Elliott) and Donald Nettle (Tony Frank) are obsessed with taking Gaines down because he has corrupted the daughter of a prominent local citizen. Jim and Kristen, who fall in love and move in together, befriend a petty car thief, Walker (Max Perlich), who has ties to Gaines. Since they both become drug addicts, Jim and Kristen's case makes little progress, until they clean up and convince Walker to turn on Gaines. Their investigation becomes tainted, however, when they are pressured from above to manufacture false evidence against their target. The soundtrack for Rushcontained the hit song "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Without even questioning the cast of this incredible movie, the script was awesome. I don't know how many people know that this was a ttrue story told from the perspective of Jennifer Jason-Leigh's character. Which make'sit all the more real. If you've lived the life, been there, done that shi**- this will be even more tantalizing for you to watch - but even if you haven't, it is well written enough that you are glued to your seat. I have probably watched this movie 50 times (and i don't do that with any other movie) and i bawl like a little girl EVERY single time i watch it. It shows to me what true love really means. I recommend it highly. Whoops - had to come back and mention the absolutely incredible soundtrack. Every note, from every song, was dead on to the particular scene that was being acted out at the time. I don't think you could have had this good a movie without both of these ingredients together.

A superb cast in a gripping story that is all we ask for right? Well, you get that with rush and then some... The sound track rocks. It is wonderfully acted. It keeps you at the edge of your seat. This is a classic film. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Patric at their best.

Admittedly it depicts the perils of being a narc officer, but it was exceedingly grim, and cryptic, for example in the courtroom with Gaines' expression and at the end leaving questions unanswered.
