Rory (Alexis Bledel) faces her upcoming 21st birthday with sadness, resigned to the fact that mother Lorelei (Lauren Graham) will not attend. Meanwhile, her grandfather Richard (Edward Herrmann) wants Rory and to make up with Lorelai -- but only so that Rory will be persuaded to return to Yale.
