When a young girl is snatched away from her father by a horrifying giant monster that emerges from the River Han to wreak havoc on Seoul, her entire family sets out to locate the beast and bring their little girl back home to safety in South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's big-budget creature feature. Hee-bong is a man of modest means who runs a snack bar on the banks of the River Han. Along with his slow-witted eldest son, Gang-du; Gang-du's young daughter, Hyun-seo; archery champion daughter Nam-joo; and unemployed, shirker son, Nam-il, Hee-Bong has managed to maintain a close relationship with his family despite the hardships that come with being a single father. Great creature in CGI and a solid story as well. Do yourself a big favor and turn the audio to Korean and use subtitles. The voice talents in the dubbed version were comedic at best and very distracting...going way against the mood of the movie. The story line really focuses on family loyalties and there is a large amount of political commentary (illustrating how pervasive western/U.S. influence is in Korean affairs). I really enjoyed the movie. Watching the creature run around in broad daylight was fantastic. What a multi-layered movie!

For those looking for something different AND extremely entertaining, I'd highly recommend this. It's a bizarre hybrid of genres like monster horror/action film and family melodrama with some comedy and social commentary mixed in there. It's just an all-around enjoyable and unpredictable movie, and much better than most cliche horror films.

This movie was more than I expected it to be. The special effects were well done, loved the monster. It is not mainstream, if you are looking for a blood-filled scarey movie, this is not it. You have to have an off-beat sense of humor and perspective to like this movie....Godzilla buffs may like this movie, as would anyone who appreciated the movie Ticks. I personally loved it.
