Accordingly, Sheridan contributes heavily to the church-repair fund of neighborhood priest Father Amian (Claude Rains). Hoping to further extend his generosity, Gardner tips the father off to a "sure thing" in an upcoming race -- and against his better judgment, Father Amian hands over 500 dollars in church funds for Gardner to bet at the track.
