Chiaki Kuriyama, Hyde, and Hiroki Narimiya bring Ai Yazawa's best-selling manga to the screen in a touching tale of undying love written and directed for the screen by Ken Nikai. Mizuki (Kuriyama) is about to turn 19, though the tragedies of the past year hardly seem worth celebrating. Still reeling from her mother's recent suicide, jilted by an unfaithful boyfriend, and betrayed by her closest friend, Mizuki is left all alone in an unforgiving world in which even her stepfamily seems coolly distant. Now the only thing left to do is leave it all behind and start life anew, and upon arriving at a dilapidated estate which seemed to beckon her from afar, Mizuki makes the acquaintance of mysterious and melancholy musician Adam (Hyde). His familiar melodies stirring something strangely irresistible within Mizuki, Adam soon sets the troubled young girl on a determined path to solve a mystery two decades in the making before the waning moon goes dark. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie was incredible. Ai Yazawa, one of the most dramatic manga authors I know mixed with great acting and a (let's face it...) hot Jrock/Pop artist is the perfect formula for a great movie. Last Quarter is a little confusing ( The moon from 19 years ago is the same moon from today...) but stick to it through the end and everything will make sense. But it's also a beautiful love story executed in a fairly typical Japanese format, which made it seem that much harder on the main characters in the eyes of me( an American). I can honestly say I never cry at movies, I teared up and Pearl Harbor, and I was sniffling at the end of Moonchild ( written and staring Gackt, costarring Hyde), but the movie had me seconds from bursting into tears. Definitely see it if you are a romantic or a closet romantic ( like me) who loves foreign films.

The primary audience for this movie is probably adolescent females and those familiar with the manga. If you liked the Chinese movie "Tiramisu", you might like this movie as their themes are similar - young love cut short, but briefly maintained during a transition to the afterlife. This is a very quiet, stylized and atmospheric film. During the middle of the movie, the plot became a bit difficult to follow. Be sure to watch the film to the very end as there's a bit more story near the end of the credits. Overall, the directing, set design and special effects were well done. The picture quality was very clear and colorful. Unfortunately, the audio is in stereo. As for extras, there's a trailer for the movie that is not subtitled and trailers for three anime features. Lightly recommended.
