Hal Foster's Sunday-comics saga of a young Viking prince in the service of King Arthur is brought to the screen in CinemaScope and Technicolor in Prince Valiant. Despite the fact that he sports a dutch bob that makes him look like actress Phyllis Kirk, Robert Wagner is quite virile and convincing as the title character. Trained for the Round Table by Sir Gawain (Sterling Hayden), Valiant takes time out to fall in love with the beautiful Princess Aleta (Janet Leigh). The villain of the piece is The Black Knight, aka Sir Brack (top-billed James Mason), who intends to topple King Arthur (Brian Aherne) from his throne, then conquer Valiant's people in Scandia. But Prince Valiant proves a fearsome opponent to the usurping Sir Brack. Sadly, most currently available prints of Prince Valiant have been panned-and-scanned, denying viewers the opportunity to revel in Henry Hathaway's creative utilization of the CinemaScope format. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A good old-fashioned adventure with lots of intrigue, action and romance. James Mason is a perfect villain, Robert Wagner makes a good Prince Valliant and Janet Leigh and Debra Paget are as lovely as ever. Not the greatest knights of the round table adventure ever filmed, but a good way to spend an evening.

This is a mindless action adventure film from the 50's. I loved it when I was a kid and it does not disappoint now. It may drag a bit for the younger crowd, but it is just fun. The illustrations at the beginning of Hal Foster's comic strip of the same name are classic. Seeing Victor McLaughlin as the Viking Voltar is a kick. Nothing to offend anyone here.

Now in the miracle of Cinemascope, Mr. Erikson. Rousing, beautiful musical score is a highlight, and due to obvious restoration, fidelity is excellent. Broadsword fight and firery final battle are very well staged. Mix of beautiful second unit location footage and studio- bound back projection is a minus. Dialog is subpar compared to better written age of chivalry films; everyone talks in lowbrow 1950's-speak. Characters are cliched. Mason is deliciously sinister, and Hayden sparkles in a change of pace role. There's a blantantly clear slap at McCarthyism in a scene where Valient is asked "to name names".
