Prick Up Your Ears (1987)

Prick Up Your Ears (1987)
Member Rating:
This unadorned biography of playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) charts his bawdy, dangerous relationships. Alfred Molina plays Orton's brutish lover, Kenneth Halliwell, a pathetic figure who becomes horrific and then tragic before the film is over. The hilarity of scenes from such Orton plays as Loot and What the Butler Saw is evenly balanced by the bleakness of the playwright's tormented (and tormenting) off-stage existence, which ended suddenly at age 34 with half a dozen blows to the head from a hammer. Prick Up Your Ears is based on the book by theater critic John Lahr, who is played in the film by Wallace Shawn. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If this is a true to life account, I could see why Kenneth was so much in love with, and jealous of, him at the same time. Gary Oldman made Joe a very likeable and fun person. Why Joe stayed with Kenneth (Alfred Molina) will be forever a mystery. Sometimes people that inspire each other should not be together.

Despite the "perfectly written, directed, and acted" aspect commented upon by another reviewer, like yet another, I, too, almost "fell asleep." Fascinated only by the excellent acting and beliveabillity of the lives and relationships, nevertheless, either despite of or perhaps because of it being a true life story, it was uninteresting. There was no real drama, just their fluffy, tumultuous, and eventually tragic life.

Fell asleep. Didn't make it through to the brutal end.
