i can only describe my feelings on this movie as ambivalent. i want to say i really liked it, but i can't, and i didn't dislike it either. it's a very different movie, and it alternates between french and english, which was a surprise, since at the blockbuster store, it said nowhere on the box that this was a foreign language film... but that didn't matter much, there are subtitles. none of the actors are well known in the u.s., but they aren't bad. sometimes this movie is confusing, and sometimes it's creepy as heck, and sometimes it's really sad. i would recommend it, but i would have to suggest that you keep an OPEN MIND, because it can get kind of weird.

This is an interesting mystery story--a man apparently has amnesia and takes refuge in the gay community of Montreal. Many around him are suspicious that he's escaping a criminal past in the U.S., and just faking it to start a new life. The movie slowly unravels the truth as the police, a doctoral student, the gay community, and the press each take different angles to uncover the truth. Even though it's an "independent" movie, all of the acting is excellent, and the movie is well-edited. The only unrealistic part of the movie is that the main character (who, it turns out, comes from a hick town in Tennessee) learns to converse in French in less than three months. Although I can't say it's the most exciting movie I've ever seen, it is well put together, and the main actor, Dusan Dukic, is very easy on the eyes.

Understated, scary. What if you were beaten and woke up with no memory? If you liked "Memento," this rather a real life inspired version, of a person trying to recover and unravel the truth.
