Jeffrey Blitz's seriocomedy Rocket Science proves that many a handicap can be overcome, no matter how daunting the obstacle at hand may initially seem. Newcomer Reece Thompson plays Hal Hefner, a 15-year-old high-school student with a minor yet socially alienating (and painful) disability: he stutters uncontrollably. Determined to work through the problem, Hal opts for an extreme route -- he joins the school debating team, which sends him on a headfirst plunge into breakneck speech competitions -- and offers a much-needed boost toward correcting the problem. Blitz, like his onscreen alter ego, struggled with a stammer as a young man -- a disability he eventually surmounted -- which imparted him with a lifelong interest in speech and storytelling. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

This was a very articulate and witty film that I found engaging throughout. Characters that are easy to love and identify with struggle with their lives and find the best in themselves. I found this film to be subtle, charming, funny and very intelligent. Subtle and intelligent , no doubt being the reasons for the bad reviews. Check it out.

This movie was very well filmed and acted, and didn't fall on very many old "pseudo-comedy" cliches to get it's point across. The cinematography was sleek and had many unique cuts and symmetrical shots. The acting was well planned and the kid that plays Hal was absolutely perfect as a high-school stutterer. I myself dealt with this problem throughout school and found his characters' mannerisms and dealings with situations to be spot on. An enjoyable movie that may let you in on the thoughts behind an affliction not many people know about.

The synopsis of this movie states that it "proves that many a handicap can be overcome." Bologna. It proves no such thing. It's a depressing and all-too-real dramatization of the shortcomings of a boy with a stutterring handicap. He NEVER overcomes the handicap in the movie, but instead evidently learns that acceptance of the handicap is the best he can hope for. Kudos to Anna Kendrick for perfectly portraying the "I'm-better-than-you-are" high school girl that everyone hates, but secretly wishes they could be. I will admit that the movie was well-acted, but, in the end, I was very disappointed in the message.
