Popi (1969)
Member Rating:
Striving for a better life for his two sons, a Puerto Rican immigrant named Popi (Alan Arkin) goes about his mission in a singularly eccentric fashion in this comedy from director Arthur Hiller. So intent is Harlem resident Abraham "Popi" Rodriguez (Arkin) upon providing his boys with the American dream, that he puts off marrying his beautiful girlfriend Lupe (Rita Moreno) in order to carry out the mother of all harebrained schemes. After instructing his boys how to row with lessons in Central Park, Popi takes them to Florida and sets them adrift on the ocean, knowing that two cute "refugees from Cuba" seeking asylum in the U.S. will become celebrity cases and probably be adopted by rich WASP's. Popi's plan works like a charm, with his sons even earning an audience with the president, but a visit to the hospital where they're recovering from their ordeal at sea sinks his big plans. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Lucky for me this is the movie that I requested and got. I got this movie for my 12 year old nephew. I enjoyed it when I was young and I hoped he would. He loved it. He's at the right age for a movie such as this and unfortunately he could relate to the dad because his mom hollers just the same (just as many parents do when their kids continually mess up). Fun film give it a chance.

Alan Arkin is always great; but the script was not well written or not well edited. The first hour of this 90 minute story is spent building up the situation(s) of hardship which result in the main character's outlandish plot to improve the lives of his 2 sons. It would have been much much better if that aspect of the story had been established in just a few words of commentary in the beginning of the film; then the bulk of the story would have centered around the efforts to execute Popi's plan, and the fallout that ensues.
