Eric Roberts' performance as Paulie in "The Pope of Greenwich Village" is truly phenomenal, captivating, mesmerizing. He steals the show; why wasn't he nominated for an Oscar? Paulie is the most idiotic, and yet sympathetic, small-time wise guy you'll ever see on screen. Burt Young is also fine as the sadistic Bed Bug Eddie, whose path Paulie crosses once too often, and Tony Musante resonates as Paulie's Uncle Pete, who is desperate to save Paulie from himself. "The Pope" has a fresh and intriguing story line in the manner of old-time, outlaw-buddy movies. The marvelous opening scene introduces us to Paulie and his cousin Charlie in full parade of all their tragic flaws (e.g., they'd both rather score than work for a living), setting the tone for the inevitable, tragicomic events to follow.

Was so disappointed that this movie had neither CC or subtitles in English. The hearing impaired are not able to watch this movie.
