Time Machine: The True Story of the Bridge on the River Kwai (2000)
Member Rating:
Each episode of the History Channel program Time Machine takes viewers on an in-depth journey through a seldom traveled corridor of world history. Relying mostly on interviews with experts and the use of archival footage, each tape puts viewers into the historical experience. This particular episode examines the myths and legends surrounding the historical events that inspired one of the most popular war movies of all time. Of particular interest is the resurrection of the reputation of Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toosey. Portrayed as a Japanese collaborator in the film, Toosey actually stood between his men and their Japanese captors. In this tape, survivors speak of Toosey and the man's words themselves are heard on archival audio tapes. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi

This is a MUST WATCH film, especially for anyone who has seen the Hollywood movie. There are a so many inaccuracies in the Hollywood film that it is criminal to show it without showing this. That being said, the historian they chose in Thailand lacks presence and story telling ability. He is only about 10% of the film. The interviews with survivors and the story itself makes up for that. I have been to this site and have taken this train up the river. I wish I had seen this film so that I could have more fully understood the experience.

I think this documentary should be required viewing prior to seeing the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai". This is a horiffic piece of history and the movie doesn't give justice to those who worked, died, suffered and survived this tragic ordeal. I am glad to know that the rail line has been preservered and the story is there for those who choose to know the truth. My heart goes out to those who lived through this terrible time and to the families who lost their loved ones.

I liked this movie, and it was quite different than the movie that was released in 1957. What horrible conditions those POW's had to put up with in that war. They enemy was butchers!!!
