This is a beautifully filmed, tragic story of Indian women confined to seclusion and poverty by Hindi doctrine following the deaths of their husbands. Circa 1938, this movie begins with an 8 year old girl being awakened and told by her father that she is now a widow. The girl is soon to be separated from her family, have her head shaven, and spend the rest of her life in an ashram with women of similar circumstance. This historically significant and thought provoking film is complimented by magnificent cinematography and music. Direction and acting are superb. It is disturbing that writer/director Deepa Mehta had to overcome extreme political pressure to produce this exceptional film.

Be aware that this is a tragic tale, with a slight uplift at the end. Excellent movie.

This is a beautiful and thought-provoking movie. We learned about the historical and societal backdrop of the movie, and were pulled in by story and characters. I haven't seen such a great movie in a long time.
