The Pick-Up Artist (1987)

The Pick-Up Artist (1987)
Member Rating:
With this rote but well-cast romantic comedy, writer-director James Toback began his long association with actor Robert Downey, Jr. The latter stars as Jack Jericho, a grade school teacher and smooth operator who zealously polishes his cliched pick-up lines in front of a mirror. Jack's come-ons even work on Randy Jensen (Molly Ringwald), a redheaded museum tour guide who dishes up a stream of retorts, matching Jack's verbal banter. After quickly trysting in the back of Jack's car, Randy flatly thanks him and walks off. Realizing that Randy is his soul mate, Jack gets his pal Phil (Danny Aiello) to find her. She's in Atlantic City, desperately trying to win $25,000 with her paycheck. Her father, Flash (Dennis Hopper), is an inveterate alcoholic who owes the money to a mobster, Alonzo (Harvey Keitel). Alonzo is willing to erase the debt if Randy will sleep with a South American kingpin, so she's trying to hit a jackpot that will get her and Flash off the hook. With a deadline of tomorrow, Jack sets out to get Randy's money and convince her that he's Mr. Right. The Pick-Up Artist was the final film appearance of actress Mildred Dunnock, who played Jack's grandmother. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The heart of the 1980s. Wonderful flim with all the charm and appeal of that genre, complete with songs that remind you of that vibrant, upbeat time.. Plot is a mix of romantic comedy and a little action to keep things moving and exciting. Movie has great scenes of the downtown city-life giving it a colorful flare. Throught the movie, the cast often strolled through the city during the day and evening. Audiences are taken to old downtown apartments with pushy landlords, enticing street cafes, subway corridors filled with graffiti, hamburger vendor stands, casinos, scenic urban museams, and more .The undpredictable, diverse crowd the couple runs into attest to the genuiness of living in a cool downtown city. Molly did a wonderful job as usual and the entire cast was wonderful to watch. Aside from the inconsistencies and holes in the plot, it was a colorful movie with 80s music and a wonderful cast. If you are a fan of 80s movies, then this one is worth watching. It's not that bad.

A cute movie that is an entertaining piece of fluff. Robert Downey Jr. and Molly Ringwald are simply adorable.

The Pick-Up Artist is very much a teenage 80's flick. Unlike good teenage 80's flicks--Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wondeful, etc.--this movie is disappointing. The movie concerns a weekend "love affair" between Molly Ringwald and Robert Downey, Jr. The movie has a fragmented plot and "the affair" (which forms the basis of the movie) seems unbelievable. I would pass on this one.
