Based on the controversial writings of Russian historian Lev Gumilyov, director Sergei Bodrov's look at the early years in the life of the Mongol conqueror stars Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano as Temudgin (as he was then known), Honglei Sun as Mongol chieftain Jamukha, who was both Temudgin's close friend and mortal enemy, and newcomer Khulan Chuluun as his wife, Borte. Born in the year 1162, Temudgen's childhood was marred by tragedy and peril. But a great battle would seal Temudgen's fate forever, and though history often paints him as a brute, the truth is much more complex. Few historians make mention of the role Temudgen's wife, Borte, played in advising her husband and elevating him to greatness. With Borte by his side, Temudgen would rise to become a fearless visionary whose legacy would still prove potent enough to stir controversy centuries after his death. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie was amazing! I was awestruck and fascinated through the entire movie. The cinematography was beautiful and the plot was genius. A love story about Ghengis Khan...brilliant. The director should be proud.

I watched it w/ my 14 year old son and it was great lesson in great filmaking. I mentioned to him how every single frame of the movie was a beautiful picture. Even the violence( and it is brutal at times) was beautifully filmed. I'm not sure I can think of a single film that had such beautiful cinematography( better than Out of Africa and English Patient) as even the close-ups were beautifully framed and lit. I was surprised to hear my son restate my feelings later as he watched the film as he merely stated " you're right ...every picture is like a postcard"..he did make me replay the one violent scene as he called that "sweet"! As a fan of history ,I would of liked to have seen the story line go beyond a strange love story and see how he united these roving tribes into an empire but that would of made it 4 hours long. Dedicate a rainy day to this movie and get swept up in the beauty of this film.

Not sure how historically accurate this was but very good movie. The scenery is woinderful - if it was shot in Mongolia, I want to go there! Tadanobu Asano and Khulan Chulun were terrrific. Not as pleased with Honglei Sun's performance. Understand why it received so many awards and nominations.
