Though Carloyn claims to be working on her latest manuscript at a nearby coffee shop, the reality of her situation is decidedly more desperate. Meanwhile, local maintenance worker Clyde (Whitaker) stands at the sidelines of the basketball court cheering for his little brother Godfrey (Cannon) while keeping his lingering gambling debts a well-guarded secret. In another part of town, the ageing Detective Bruner (Kelsey Grammer) methodically trails malevolent bookie Victor (Tim Roth) as Victor's small-time counterpart Augie (Mohr) patiently waits for his ship to come in. As the big game draws near and casino magician Walter (DeVito) befriends gambling-addicted novelist Carolyn, all of these disparate characters slowly come together on a tragic collision course. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The movie is offbeat but with a certain appeal that keeps you watching to see where it is going. Danny DeVito's character is quite interesting and the storyline takes a couple of twists with a somewhat surprising ending. If you like the Sundance concept of independent films, small budget etc, this should hold your interest.

Of all the movies that I've seen that touched upon some form of gambling, this one takes the cake! Being a former gambling addict myself I totally related to character Carolyn and her attraction to slots--that was the only game i evered got drawn into and of course the end results that ensued--staying out late, lying to your friends/family where you've been, and of course the biggest being the financial ruin it has caused. This movie demonstrated the various forms of gambling from being a bookie, sports betting, and the casinos and the ups and downs of winning as well as losing.

This movie is a quick study on the world of gambling in all forms. As it unfolds, it reveals the domino effect that happens when we risk more than we can afford to. It's not pretty, but may be way to honest for most to want to believe. Worth watching, but not really an enjoyable story line.
