Garçon Stupide (2004)
Member Rating:
An aimless gay teenager begins to realize the effect he has on others in this Swiss drama. Loïc (Pierre Chatagny) spends his days laying around watching television, and hooking up with anonymous johns he meets on the Internet. Leaning heavily on the support of his roommate and best friend, Marie (Natacha Koutchoumov), he shows little interest in any sort of vocation or job; that is, until he meets a thirtysomething man named Lionel (writer/director Lionel Baier). Unlike his other tricks, Lionel does not want sex from Loïc, but companionship, and the two share a series of intimate, challenging conversations -- recorded on Lionel's video camera -- that compel the young man to start finding direction in his life. As he begins to explore a burgeoning interest in photography, Loïc has some emotional growing pains, specifically in terms of his jealousy over the fact that Marie has found a boyfriend. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

Nothing important happens here. Young man finds hook-ups online, which provide some full frontal nudity and a black jockstrap. He later becomes obsessed with a hunky, famous foreign Futballer who plays for his small hometown team. All the while he feels intimitaded, resentful and jealous of the college-educated friends of his "fag hag" girlfriend. He's not smart or clever and he knows it, hence the movie's title.

This movie was o.k. It is rather slow moving as it concentrates on several characters with very little plot developement. The main character needs to grow up and realize there is more to life than his present lifestyle of gay love. There is full frontal nudity in the movie as well. The movie "needed more substance", in my opinion, see what you think...

I suppose this movie tries hard to be reasonably well done, but if it is one of the "10 Best" I'd hate to see the other 9. I found it dull and somewhat tedious to sit through. The acting and the writing are average, but perhaps it is difficult to judge the writing since subtitles are the only clue. And to have sat through the entire movie makes me, I think, the stupid one.
