Peter O'Toole can't help but over-act ... after all, the title character is one of the most notable humans in history. This is, however, a very well edit'ed adaptation of the history of Rome's first emperor. It offers additional insights into the events surrounding the life of Caesar Augustus. Don't expect too much 'swords and sandals' here, though; this adaptation is more cerebral than full of action.

Worth viewing if you enjoy stories of Roman Empire politics and power hungry families. Some of the historical details may not be accurate, but they are depicted close enough to allow this to be a believable perspective of some of the most written about events in the Roman Empire time period of Caesar Augustus. It’s a bit long but at least you don’t have to sit through TV commercials and you can always take a break where one was.

O'Toole is fine, the rest, eh. Typical of the genre and a great deal more about how Octavian became Agustus than what Agustus was like.
