Few who witnessed the awesome spectacle of the Titanic emerging from the darkness of the ocean depths in James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss are likely to forget that spectacular sight, and now the groundbreaking filmmaker journeys even deeper into unexplored territory with this look at some of nature's most elusive creations in Aliens of the Deep. Using the basic concepts of astrobiology as his foundation, Cameron enlists the aid of talented marine biologists and NASA researchers to reveal the fascinating and seldom-seen life forms of the sea and use their biological makeup to create a speculative blueprint for what life on other planets might look like. In the super-heated, mineral-charged water of hydrothermal vents, creatures such as a six-foot-tall worm with crimson plumes dance alongside blind white crabs and some of the strangest creatures you're ever likely to see. If Ghosts of the Abyss brought viewers as close as they're ever likely to get to standing on the ocean floor and beholding the majesty of one of history's most notorious tragedies, Aliens of the Deep brings them as close as they may ever come to standing face-to-face with an alien life form. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is terrible stuff as documentaries go...just alot of Cameron mugging for the camera and playing with million dollar toys. A total vehicle for him. I mean, they brought together all these terrrific resources; ships, robotic vehicles, scientists, and we never hear much about what we're actually seeing on the screen. All you hear from these amazing intellects is "that is TOtally phenomenal" or variations on that theme. We turned it off after 15 minutes; a total waste of time.

This is another vehicle for James Cameron to convince everyone that he's a bonified scientist/explorer when everyone really knows he's no more than a hollywood director trying to go legit. The movie has it's moments, but the main focus is on Cameron leading the charge and rounding up his magnificent seven (which includes his two brothers, so apparently the whole Cameron clan get get a little spot light) than it is about the actual Aliens of the deep. Too much of him, not enough creatures. Don't waste your time.

In my opinion, Aliens of the Deep is not a very good documentary. If you have ever been to Cape Canaveral and seen the pseudo-documentary/movies NASA has developed regarding the space program, you have a good idea what Aliens of the Deep is. The movie is far more “wish-washy” and idealistic than it is informative. It would have been nice to know a little about some of the creatures being shown on screen. Instead, we get to hear the scientist talk about how pretty the creatures are. When Aliens of the Deep does get informative, it lacks detail and does not add anything to previous documentaries on deep ocean exploration that have been shown on PBS or the Discovery Channel. In fact, you are better off seeking one of those programs out than watching this.
