Veteran actor Andy Garcia steps into the director's chair for his first voyage into feature filmmaking with this heartfelt tribute to revolutionary, late-'50s-era Cuba featuring Dustin Hoffman, Bill Murray, Tomas Milian, and offering the director himself in the starring role. Fico Fellove (Garcia) is the politically neutral owner of the El Tropico nightclub who seeks shelter from the winds of change behind the crowded bar of his flourishing business. Unfortunately for Fico, the blood of the revolution flows deep within the veins of his passionate brothers, and it's only a matter of time before both the club owner, and his distinguished father, are forced to face the prospect of having their lives forever changed despite their indifference to the violence that surrounds them. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Really a musical tour of and tribute to Cuba before the revolution with some historical truth to tell along the way. Written, directed, and acted by Cuban exiles and their children for Cubans and for Cuba. A very good and touching story, with perhaps some uneven dialogue and acting. Good actors seemed underutilized. The special features on the DVD tell you even more about how the makers of this film really feel about what happened to Cuba. For more on "Fidel Castro", try to find the "2005" "profile" by "Humberto Fontova" For more on "Che Guevara", "Chief executioner for the Castro regime", find the "2005" "profile" by "Humberto Fontova".

I think i could have cut out about an hour off this movie, but it was different none the less. Personally, i've seen so many movies that show cubans in miami and new york as anti-castro thereby making them republican. This movie follows many different paths cubans take in the revolution, but one of his brothers joins a rebel group that was anti batista but also anti fidel because they knew he couldn't be trusted, they had an inkling he was a communist. they wanted democracy, but castro had the stronger alliance. on top of the historical storylines, wow, the musical sequences were amazing! the mambo as it was circa havana 1958 was brillant, and the dancing. this movie was over all brillant, just a little lenghty, due because of a love story inter twined. definitely highly recommend it!

This movie shows us how wonderful it could be to be in a rich family in pre-Castro Cuba. Not exactly a surprise.... Purports to be a strong proponent of the arts and of artists, but only shows brief glimpses of these. The romantic leads are attractive people but had no spark. Bottom line is the script seemed like a Cliff's Notes version of a very long novel.
