A traveling entertainer falls prey to a disturbed recluse in director Fabrice Du Welz's twisted, slow-burn riff on Deliverance and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Having finished his latest performance at a remote retirement home, wandering singer Marc Stevens (Laurent Lucas) packs his gear into his van and sets out towards his next gig. Unfortunately for Marc, the fog-shrouded roads of rural France are more treacherous than he ever anticipated. When his van breaks down in the middle of the night and a skittish local promises to lead him to a nearby inn owned by the eccentric recluse Paul Bartel (Jackie Berroyer), it appears that luck may be on Marc's side and he will be back on the road with the light of the morning sun. This isn't your average bed and breakfast, though, and Bartel certainly isn't the kindly innkeeper he initially appears to be. When Marc's van is set aflame and his increasingly menacing host makes a most disturbing claim, the soft-spoken singer will be forced to fight for his life against not only Bartel, but an entire village of deeply disturbed woodsmen. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A director's first is often either far more experimental or far more staid than his later work. Chalk the former up to idealism and the latter up to the pressures of production. Here, Welz is certainly experimenting. His narrative is more free-form than will be comfortable for some, but that's allowed him to do several things a more linear plot wouldn't. His protaganist is ambiguous -- and in our response to him, we get closer to the horror in the movie. Worth it for the dance sequence alone.

Beware of this movie! I like foreign films. This is one of the worst. Guy's van breaks down in forest. He goes to an inn. Inn keep appears sane - later begins to think guy is his runaway wife, ties guy up, puts dress on guy, shaves guys head while guy WHINES like a baby for the rest of the movie. Oh, villagers for no explanation think guy is also a chick, and try to kidnap him for their wife. Villagers also have sex with an animal. This was BEYOND stupid and in NO WAY mirrors Deliverance, Texas Chainsaw, Southern Comfort, etc. I am good at grasping movies attempting symbolism and this doesnt even do that. Its just stupid and weird for stupid and weirds' sake. Rent only if you want to waste mail delivery time and get pissed off.

Professional reviewers give it mixed reviews. Some like it calling the tension , suspense effective. Its done in a serious style , not the usual cheesy formula horror flick. If you you are looking for the usual horror film this will seem very slow. I had high hopes since it did seem more serious in tone and effectively creates a mysterious and creepy atmosphere. However the mishmash of borrowed elements from films like Straw Dogs, Deliverance and many other horror films just goes no where for me. Its certainly far better than many of the incredibly amateurish ultra low budget horror at many rental places but ultimately its unsatisfying.
