Member Rating:
A handful of pioneering women wrestlers look back at the wild and wooly days before "sports entertainment" was a multi-million-dollar business and female grapplers were regarded as a novelty (or worse, a freak show) in this documentary. Lipstick & Dynamite examines the history of women on the professional wrestling circuit (dating back to 1939) and focuses on eight female fighters, two of whom -- The Fabulous Moolah and The Great Mae Young -- are still involved in the fight game. Offering a perspective on the darker side of the wrestling circuit, including fixed matches, male promoters eager to take advantage of naïve female newcomers, and the poor treatment and pay often afforded female contestants, the film also examines the lighter side of the business and what some of the greats of women's wrestling have done after leaving the ring. Lipstick & Dynamite was shown in competition at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This was an interesting look at the pioneers of women's professional wrestling. I'm not surprised by the stories told by these tough ladies, and the fact that they survived through all that mess is a testament to how tough they really are.

While not as interesting, lively or as much fun as "Double Dare," the documentary about stuntwomen, LIPSTICK & DYNAMITE: THE FIRST LADIES OF WRESTLING manages a pretty fair 80-odd minutes, even if it does seem a bit long at that short length. It’s always salutary to see people then and now, particularly when the span is some 50 years, and most of these women have aged, if not gracefully, at least realistically. There is an undercurrent of nastiness, misogyny, blood-lust and other unappealing characteristics here, if not in the women themselves (and sometimes even in them) then in this stupid, wasteful and (these days, and perhaps even then) phony "sport." What? You think I'm being judgmental? Tough. (But nowhere near as tough as THESE broads!) To imagine the lives they lived--and survived--is nearly, well… unimaginable.
