This is not the movie you may have rented on VHS years ago. This is a live production, they fail to tell you this in the description. They basically have 2 on this online rental service, but they are both live productions. I was very disappointed, as I was hoping to see the professionally produced version that stared the same cast. I doubt this will ever be released in the quality it deserves.

Pirates of Pensance is a great opera, but sadly this wasn't the film i thought it was. The DVD looks like it was transfered from an old Video recording. The sound is terrible and the video is wabbly and discolored. I don't really understand why they would want to transfer this to DVD. I'm sure that for a lot of people, the Pirates of Pensance that they want to see is the 1983 production version starring these same actors. Kevin Kline, Linda Rondstadt, etc. I've read that it's out on DVD, but I haven't found any place that rents it.

I thought this was entertaining BUT since it WAS a live presentation, it was difficult (almost impossible) for me to understand the words to the songs and being an operetta, the songs give the majority of the story. (Arg!) Not being able to understand the words, most of the time, I didn't have much of a clue what was going on. That part was very frustrating. Therefore, if you're already familiar with it, I'm sure you'll like it. There are great performances. If you don't know the words to the songs, go online and find them before watching. (cuz subtitles are not available on this DVD)
