I skipped through a lot of this movie as it was too many scenes of violence and/or cruelty. When the main character drowned newborn puppies (at his mother's insistence) I gave up on it. I rented it because of Gena Rowlands and she was great, as usual, but there was too little of her and too much of the boy and his pathetic family.

This movie was very different from most the same old movies. Gena Rowlands is amazing as usual and Kevin Zegers is not only VERY attractive, but a great actor. Very believable and a natural. The story revolves around Zegers's character and develops from there. The relationship between Zegers and Rowlands character is very real. The movies is smart, charming and warm. Ther a little strong language and violence. But other than that, it is a great family movie. Two thumbs up here.

This movie'sopeing scene is a school yard fight observed and commented on by the principal (James Caan) and another teacher/coach? (I didn't watch long enough to discover) who fail to intervene. I shut the movie off after watching the next scene in which the principal warns the student/"star" that he has been in so many fights he is in danger of getting throwen out of the school. Then he issues a gentle admonishement, and off you go, puppy. I was either going to turn off the movie or thow up. I opted out of the movie. SAPPY DRIVEL
