This is a top-notch spanish film that is stingingly funny while it offers a subtle critique of the protagonist's lifestyle. It is a bit over the top in it's portrayal of the staid family-man as a beaten soul and the final sequence turns into something of a feverish mess. That said, it is a very funny film with the expected European sensibility not found in U.S. comdies.

Comedy in Spain has evolved its own style: cocky, extravagant, frantic and all over the place, with a sharp, satiric edge. "The Perfect Crime" is a good example of the genre -- with a touch of Hitchcock thrown into the Almodovarian madness, for good measure. It's a battle to the finish for the title "floor manager" at a fancy downtown department store, between a lothario who is bedding half the luscious sales girls he supervises, and the odious manager of the men's clothing department. Abetted by an able cast of farceurs, a clever script, lively direction and an infectious musical score, the first half moves like a house on fire. The momentum inevitably cools somewhat in the less assured second half, but it is hard to resist such a prodigious explosion of creative energy.
