Most famous for his original Godzilla film in 1956, director Inoshiro Honda is primarily a screenwriter and quite seldom a director. One of his recurrent themes -- the deadly or mutant effects of atomic radiation (as in Godzilla), is also featured in this otherwise routine sci-fi film. The title characters are from a planet that has been destroyed by nuclear bombs. After the Mysterians land on Earth they ask the Japanese for some land to settle and a few nubile women to propagate their race. Scientists are dubious about the intentions of these aliens and so an offensive is launched against them, an offensive that looks like it has no hope of success. Special effects here are excellent considering that computer-generated effects were far in the future. The large robot may be the one exception. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Early widescreen Toho invaders from space movie has primitive but engaging special effects work and lots of action. The bad guys resemble the Power Rangers, and aren't terribly fthreatening, but the final showdown is exciting with plenty of weaponry and explosions done with excellent miniatures. Good fun. Disc contains a commentary track in Japanese (with subtitles) by a couple of Toho special effects men that is mildly interesting. Movie can be watched dubbed or with subtitles.

Want some fun? You have to rent this movie. This was a serious attempt by Japan at making an "invasion" movie. By today's standards, yeah- it has some laughable moments; the weapon from the Mysterian's Dome that causes the tanks to melt is cool enough, but the miniatures are just soft plastic under a hot lamp of some type. And the giant robot looks like a chicken made out of corrugated tin (help! we're under attack by the tool shed!). All in all, though, a good time. Have a couple of drinks or.. whatever... and it gets a lot better.

This is a fascinating sci-fi film from Japan. Made in the late 1950s the special effects are fairly good; even by today's standards. This movie is well worth watching and is especially recommended for sci-fans.
