Happily Ever After (2004)
Member Rating:
Writer, director, and actor Yvan Attal takes another look at the ups and downs of love and monogamy in this biting romantic comedy. Vincent (Yvan Attal), Fred (Alain Cohen), and Georges (Alain Chabat) are three Parisian men in their early forties who are coming to the unfortunate realization that their love lives are not what they dreamed of in their youth. Vincent is married to Gabrielle (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and while there's still some spark left in their marriage, it usually appears only after an argument. Vincent is having a furtive affair with a beautiful woman (Angie David), while Gabrielle is tempted to do the same when a handsome man in a record shop (Johnny Depp) begins silently flirting with her. Fred is the bachelor of the group, and seems to have an endless parade of women passing through his bedroom, but no one misses the fact that he longs for the sort of long-term relationship that has so far evaded him. And Georges is reaching the end of his rope with his wife, Nathalie (Emmanuelle Seigner), an abrasive feminist who insists on making every aspect of their lives a political matter, but lacking the courage to break up with her, Georges deals with his feelings in the traditional manner -- he buys a new car. Happily Ever After was Attal's first project as writer and director after his international hit Ma Femme Est une Actrice. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A nice step forward for writer/director Yvan Attal after his earlier collaborations with his now wife Charlotte Gainsbourg ("Aux Yeux du Monde," "My Wife Is an Actress"), HAPPILY EVER AFTER tracks the up-and-down relationships of three male friends and their femmes (and neighbors). The movie ranges from funny to silly, sad, surprising, and then lifts off into the stratosphere--literally and figuratively--thanks to a cameo appearance from someone special (if you don’t know who, just watch and enjoy). Attal shows growth and even more promise with this new film; he offers a wider range of people, ideas, feelings and disappointments than in his "Wife/Actress," and Gainsbourg does her hubby proud. She's engaging and intelligent, dreamy and poised, angry as hell and always somehow in command--even when she appears not to be.

For a long time, i always avoided movies where current lovers and spouses were in opposing roles in movies....especially where they are cast as lovers. I rented this movie because i was bored. I have to say, i was nicely surprised to see this movie. Its a classic relationship hurdle you find in everyday life....The daily struggle to balance your mediocre/boring everyday routine as opposed to taking risky chances to spice your life. Charlotte Gainsbourg has been one of my favorite French actresses for a long time, only rivaled by Eva Green.....Good movie to remind you whats at stake when you think its just a "minor discretion"...Highly recommended

Ok...so I gave away the surprise. But if you love french comedy/dramas and Johnny Depp then I suggest you rent this movie. Depp has a small part but it was a wonderful surprise to see him. Film is overall good, but not great.
