Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962)
Member Rating:
Screenwriter Nunnally Johnson adapted the novel by author Edward Streeter, whose work was also the basis of Father of the Bride (1950), into this domestic comedy. James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara star as Roger and Peggy Hobbs, a St. Louis couple with a large brood who desire a seaside vacation. Renting a cottage by the ocean is just the first step in a summer fraught with disasters, including a couch potato son, a shy daughter with newly installed braces, a pair of grown daughters who have married badly, and a local yachtsman with eyes for Peggy. Not to mention the ramshackle state of the shoreline abode, Roger and Peggy's new grandparent status, and incidents involving a sexy neighbor, a sailboat regatta and bird watching. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

What a delightful family movie! (I've actually seen this many times) Great casting of Maureen and James... they make a perfect couple for this show. A vacation that Roger thought was just for he and his wife, Peggy, turns in to a vacation filled with a family going thru some awkward stages. The writers capture some typical family troubles and mesh the drama with comedy. Also, I like the underlying message of parents really paying attention to what is happening with their children and actively participating to help. I'm really picky about comedies, and this is one of my top 10 favorite comedies. The Out-of-Towners (the original one with Sandy Dennis and Jack Lemmon) is my favorite. If you live or have lived in NYC, then this movie will be even funnier. I can't even remember how many times our family have watched it and we still all crack up!

A James Stewart classic - though one of his lesser known movies! A great tongue-in-cheek look at family life and the family vacation. Some very funny moments throughout!
