A long talky film in which it is impossible to connect with any of the characters. What was the big deal with Ava Gardner?

The best thing about this long movie was its rich color. Ava Gardner looked spectacular, and Humphrey Bogart was infinitely appealing. But the story was mediocre at best. Very dated! And Rossanno Brazzi was the perfect creep. End of story.
