Australian playwright Tony McNamara makes his directorial debut with the offbeat comedy The Rage in Placid Lake, adapted from his own play The Cafe Latte Kid. In his first feature film, indie rocker Benny Lee stars as a troubled teen named Placid Lake. The child of new-agey eccentric parents (Garry McDonald and Miranda Richardson), Placid spends his childhood getting picked on by bullies. Fortunately, he finds friendship with classmate Gemma Taylor (Rose Byrne), whose father (Nicholas Hammond) pressures her to excel in school. After Placid shocks the school with his dark student film, he gets into an accident that lands him in the hospital. Upon his recovery, he reinvents himself as an conservative insurance agent and engages in an affair of sorts with emotionally detached co-worker Jane (Saskia Smith). The Rage in Placid Lake was screened at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

Worth a look from film buffs, especially those who appreciate things Australian, THE RAGE IN PLACID LAKE (great title: it's NOT a place) tracks the growing pains (most of them are quite literally that) of a young man with hippie/heavy parents who tries to fit into the Aussie world. Lead actor Bee Lee is very good--quirky, somewhat attractive, with a presence that commands and beguiles. (He's also a good singer/songwriter: listen for his "Naked" over the end credits.) Writer/director Tony McNamara has taken this from his own play, and he sure knows how to "open out" the proceedings. Visually, the film is lovely: crisp and bright, great colors, nice compositions. Garry McDonald, Rose Bryne (who’s gone on to bigger things), Miranda Richardson (in her usual fine form), and a stable of good Aussie actors round out the cast. The climax is particularly sharp--funny, provocative and not your usual "family" feel-good twaddle. This is yet another Film Movement find.

This strikingly unconventional movie proves that Ben Lee is not only a lyrical genius but also a brilliant actor. This is not only for Ben Lee fans though, it is a great story about a boy who is bullied as a child and as a result ends up being an unusually odd young man. If you like movies about offbeat peculiar quirky characters, this is a can't miss. I'd love to say more but wouldn't want to ruin it for you.

This movie held me captive. I thought the acting was great and the storyline always kept you focused on the characters. Like the other reviewer, it is a lot like Garden State. If you liked that you will surely like this.
