Beautiful animation, but absolutely terrible writing. If you have the patience to deal with the confusing plot and two-dimensional, unlikeable and downright convoluted characters, go ahead...

I was optimistic going into this feature, despite having never heard of it. After watching, I kind of know why. To be honest, the story and design reminded me of some dilapidated amalgam of Miyazaki, Osamu Tezuka, and Katsuhiro Otomo, but without any of the really good abilities of ANY of these masters. The characters lacked depth, the protagonist Palme was irritatingly bipolar, and the story was a bit complex to follow - almost as though there were 2-3 plots to keep up with. Erg. I will say that the design and animation was rather appealing in this work. However, I'd recommend any number of other anime titles over this one for the "robot seeking humanity" theme.

Great anime fantasy movie. I put this one on my top favorites. It reminded me a Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by the style and the imaginative creativity. It also rang a little bit of Metropolises and Pinocchio. The plot is about a mechanical doll named Palme, he was created to take care of Xion, his creators dieing wife. Pamle then gets introduced to a mysterious lady being pursued by the “People Below” she asked him to deliver a special object to the Tama. He wakes thinking she is Xion, who died. And pursues his quest, while being perused from the people below. This anime was directed by Takashi Nakamura who also helped in Akira, Chinese ghost story, and Nausicaa. Also the anime had the same Character Designer that help out in Blood, Blue Submarine, Jin-Roh, KiKi Delivery, Three-eyed One, Tokyo Godfathers, Please twins, Paranoia Agent, and Millennium Actress. And the same art director as in Castle in the Sky and Spriggan.
