Member Rating:
Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato follow up Party Monster by returning to the documentary form of their most popular film The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Rather than examining evangelists-cum-gay icons, this time the duo takes aim at the cultural phenomenon that is and was Deep Throat, the hardcore porn film that cost 25,000 dollars to make and grossed over 600-million-dollars world-wide, making it the most successful independent film of all time. The impact of the film on the public's perception of pornography is discussed, as is the unlikely relationship the film had to the Watergate scandal. Actress Linda Lovelace who later denounced Deep Throat, claiming she'd been forced to make it at gunpoint, appears in interviews that were shot just before her fatal 2002 car accident. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

"Deep Throat" at this point is a classic seen by almost everybody and their mother. Enough of the censorship. I can understand not wanting to distribute NC17 or old school X rated films in the retail stores because there are children in the store but if an adult wishes to see something a tad bit "naughty", you should be able to satisfy that desire. As anticipated, I was not thrilled. As previously noted, boring.

I really enjoyed the way this was put together. The discussion of censorship is very relevant today and is something we all need to think real hard about.

This film is about choice -- to consume porn or not -- and how some will misuse the power of the State to eliminate that choice, even for consenting adults. So I find it ironic that, even though this film is available in an NC-17 rated version, Blockbuster only offers the "R" rated version. This from a company that boasts about providing its customers the choice of over 40,000 movie titles (I've been a satisfied customer, by the way). Once again (I live in Georgia, where one cannot buy alcohol on Sunday), "The Church Lady" wins.
