I wish I had read the notes more carefully before renting this. I enjoy Benjamin Britten's other music, but this libretto is not for me! Most of us have a hard enough time with the spoken words of middle English. The music, while skillfully crafted, is discordant and brooding, not at all what I think of when I think of a Shakespearian comedy. The sets are brilliant, but again I think they miss the mark - they're too monochromatic (or perhaps that's just a factor of the age of the tape from which the DVD was made). Overall, I'd rather have seen a high school production of the non-operatic version.
