Member Rating:
Based on the 1997 National Book Award-nominated novel of the same name by Diane Johnson (co-writer of the script for Stanley Kubrick's The Shining), Le Divorce is a romantic comedy from director James Ivory. Revisiting the "Americans in France" theme that Ivory explored in 1998's A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries, the film stars Kate Hudson as Isabel Walker. When she receives word that her pregnant poetess sister Roxy (Naomi Watts) has been left by her philandering French husband, artist Charles-Henri de Persand (Melvil Poupaud), Isabel offers her help and moral support. As the depressive Roxy struggles with the separation proceedings -- which include the rights to ownership of a work of art that's a family heirloom -- Isabel takes a job with author Olivia Pace and has a fling with the bohemian Yves (Romain Duris). But things get complicated when the younger, more impudent sister decides instead to pursue Charles' uncle, the snooty, married diplomat Edgar (Thierry Lhermitte), and when a mysterious man (Matthew Modine) starts stalking Roxy. Eventually, the rest of the plucky Walker clan has to come to the aid of the siblings. Stockard Channing and Sam Waterston co-star. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

I have been cheated our of 1 hour & 57 minutes of life that could have been spent on a multitude of worthier things. WOW, did I expect better! You couldn't get into the plot, the people or any facet of love story they attempted to communicate. Kate Hudson was one-dimensional, Naomi Watts was irritating and Matthew Modine came off as a stalker. Hey what more can you ask for right?! Please, do not be fooled by the lure of Hudson or Watts, or that it takes place in Paris! I am trying to do you a favor. DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE!!

The director is obsessed with France; I lost count on how often the actresses are forced to spout off uninteresting customs of French women. The film has a 5-minute boring story, which is stretched out to however long the film was. It was such a bore I stared doing chores. Nothing really happens, it has no direction. The script was awful… Almost as bad as Be Cool. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The actors/actresses seem very disinterested in their parts, directing and the story. It’s definitely not funny at all! Overall, the movie left me feeling bored and hollow.

Fun and entertaining, but not really a good movie. It's shallow and uneven, with no place to go. Actors like Sam Waterston, Naomi Watts, Stockard Channing and Kate Hudson make it entertaining to watch, but a story of jealousy and murder in the middle of the movie makes absolutely no sense, not to mention the shallowness and coolness of the French making the movie a critique to the whole French culture.
