Born Into This brutally depicts the life of the poet/novelist and artist Charles Bukowski who, like Hemingway, Picasso and Rodin, was a brilliant, articulate wreck of a human being. From his childhood to his death, one follows Bukowski's evolution as an artist but, as mentioned in the other review, how he never does grow up, never achieves the emotional maturity in his life that one sees in his work. Epitomizes the line from Bergman's `Autumn Sonata': "I could always live in my art, but never in my life." Highly recommended for anyone interested in Bukowski, of course, but also for anyone involved in the arts or the artistic temperament. Sometimes the greatest artists are not the greatest people.

BUKOWSKI: BORN INTO IT is as rich & full a documentary as you are likely to see about a single subject--in this case poet/novelist/asshole Henry Charles Bukowski. Finishing it, you should have a pretty fair idea of who this guy was, what his writing covers & many of the people who surrounded him. It's rare for any documentary to have the camera running at times when its subject is abusing his wife/girlfriend, but you get that here, and it's disturbing, all right. You also get Mr. Bukowski ruminating on everything from his dad (& the beatings he took off the guy), his work, women, sex, love & life in general. He never grew up (understandable, given his life as a child), & neither did his writing, as good as it sometimes is. His attitude toward life, work & women reflects an adolescent stance. (I suspect there are a lot of us "children posing as adults" who echo the Bukowski attitude.) In any case, the film is a must for lovers of this writer & for anyone who wants to know more of him.

Bukowski: Born Into This: Fine documentary on the life of Charles Henry Bukowski, brilliant poet, postal worker, and a serious drunk and womanizer in his spare time. This film portrays Bukowski as the multi-faceted individual he must have been. Great footage of Bukowski reading (he has a terrific voice), philosophizing, cursing, and of friends' memories. Beats Barfly hollow.
