Member Rating:
This sentimental made-for-TV drama was based on the bestselling novel by Donna VanLiere, which in turn was inspired by the popular song of the same name. Rob Lowe stars as Robert Layton, a workaholic attorney who sorely neglects his family, even during the Christmas season. Clearly, Layton is overdue for a "humanizing" treatment, which comes in the form of a little boy named Nathan Andrews (Max Morrow). Learning that his mother, Maggie (Kimberly Williams), is dying from congenital heart failure, and unable to financially rely upon his underemployed father, Jack (Hugh Thompson), Nathan goes about collecting tin cans and other throwaways so that he can afford an expensive pair of red shoes for his ailing mom. Nathan's plight not only touches Layton, but also has a heartwarming trickle-down effect on the lawyer's estranged family. The Christmas Shoes debuted December 1, 2002, on CBS. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It was so sweet but so sad.

The Christmas Shoes is the prequel to The Christmas Blessing (2005). It is a sad movie, a real bummer, with an uplifting ending. It is a story about two families that become intimately intertwined in accidents of fate. Rob Lowe plays a gigantically selfish jerk of an attorney who is too busy making a living to live. After causing a lot of suffering he finally wakes up and gives a little somewhat paralleling the Scrooge plot. The direction and execution is surprisingly good for a movie riding on the edge of corny and sappy from beginning to end. I was able to watch it through and be inspired.

It was a very good, very emotional movie. I wouldn't say it is for everyone. Anyone who doesn't like sad movies wouldn't be a huge fan. However if you want a good cry, and you want to be touched by the movie it was a wonderful family movie.
