For a newbie, this was quite refreshing. While it takes a moment to build up and there really are some very obvious clues as to who might be guilty and who is clearly on the good side, you won't mind playing along. Lord Peter is very witty and while not always funny, it's amusing to try to watch him go through the motions and try to solve the case from his perspective. And you'll LOVE the party get-up. I enjoyed it.

The summary of the plot given for Murder Must Advertise is, in fact, roughly the plot line for The Five Red Herrings. In Murder Must Advertise Lord Peter goes to work for an advertising agency, asked by the owner to quietly investigate the death of an employee who fell (accidently?) down the firm's spiral staircase. Do not expect a modern context. Dorothy Sayers was one of the best of the great British mystery writers of the 1920's and 30's, considered by many to be the richest period for the genre. Knowing this will help you date the costumes, cars, etc. As for the production itself, it is incredibly enjoyable, as are all the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries which were produced for public television. My favorite is the clever Nine Tailors.
