Portrait of a Marriage (1990)

Portrait of a Marriage (1990)
Member Rating:
Adapted from the autobiographical novel by Nigel Nicolson, the four-part British miniseries Portrait of a Marriage was inspired by the marriage of convenience between Nicolson's parents, historian Harold Nicolson and novelist Vita Sackville-West (Janet McTeer). Although the elder Nicolson was homosexual, his wife Vita was not only forgiving, but also obliging when he strayed from home and hearth to pursue partners of his own gender. After all, Vita was herself embroiled in a torrid -- and ultimately tragic -- affair with one Violet Keppel (Cathryn Harrison). The winner of a BAFTA award for Best Costume Design (Dinah Collin), Portrait of a Marriage was telecast in Britain and New Zealand in 1990, and in the United States two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I've been on a kick of watching BBC/Masterpiece Theatre productions, which is why I gave this one a try. It's horrible. Janet McTeer's overacting is absolutely horrendous; it's embarrassing to watch. The only good thing about the production is the lovely English countryside.

Amazing performance by all the actors - extremely well done. This mini series was good on so many levels. The interaction between McTeer and Haig was wonderful and made the characters Vita and Harold both sympathetic and apalling. You even feel a bit sorry for Violet, although she was a manipulating b----.

Intense drama with a terrific performance by McTeer as Vita Sackville-West. Well worth watching, particularly for the contradictions between Sackville-West as the successful author and Sackville-West as the demanding, clinging lover of Violet (played by Cathryn Harrison).
