The Lathe of Heaven was a made-for-cable remake of the 1980 TV movie of the same name, both based upon the futuristic novel by Ursula K. LeGuin. Former child star Lukas Haas is effectively cast as George Orr, an otherwise ordinary man who experiences extraordinary dreams. When the visions in his head begin coming true -- and even seem to be altering reality -- the anguished Orr consults psychiatrist Walter Haber (James Caan), which is the first of many miscalculations on the part of the protagonist. Dr. Haber intends to harness George's "talent" to bring his own peculiar notion of Utopia to full fruition. Will the fabric of the space-time continuum unravel as Haber plots and plans and Orr's dreams become more and more frightening? And how does Orr's extremely skeptical (and ravishingly beautiful) lawyer Heather LaLache (Lisa Bonet) figure into all this? Lathe of Heaven made its A&E cable network bow on September 8, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The original made-for-PBS version was perhaps one of the best psychological sci-fi movies of all time, and I was ecstatic when it finally became available on video. I had watched it when it was first released, and was lucky enough to see it twice. This is NOT that movie. This is a piece of offal that attempted to capitalize of the popularity of the original when it was first released. Whereas the first film stuck close to Ursala K. LeGuin's novel (the sequence of events were changed slightly), this version doesn't even come close. A complete waste of time, money and tape. Just a confused and confusing piece of junk.

...where shall we start. Maybe we should have read the book instead. The A&E version of the film is deplorable. Everyone is on valium and the rhythm is like the last breath of a dying sloth. Did the director fall asleep while filming? We did while watching it. James Caan picking his ears as a clever psychiatrist was a remarkably realistic portrayal (not). We need a therapist now to move through the trauma of watching this unspeakably bad movie. Hurray for the costume designer. The bizarre costumes kept us from turning it off for a long time. Too long of a time... Stay away from it

I was intrigued by this storyline about a young man who is able to change realities through his dreams.
