The Inspector Lynley Mysteries: A Great Deliverance (2001)
Member Rating:
Thomas Lynley (Nathaniel Parker) is a detective inspector with Scotland Yard; he's also the eighth Earl of Asherton, and his mixture of upper-class refinement, private-school affectations, and steel-nerved street smarts set the stage for this made-for-TV mystery based on the novel by Elizabeth George. A farmer is found decapitated in York, and Lynley and his new partner, Sgt. Barbara Havers (Sharon Small), are sent in to investigate. The farmer's reclusive daughter immediately confesses to the crime, but Lynley has a hunch there's more to the crime than she's telling him. He discovers there are more than a few people who would stand to gain a great deal from the farmer's death. While Lynley struggles to get to the bottom of the case, he soon finds himself butting heads with Sgt. Havers; she's as much a part of the working class as he is entrenched in blue-blood society, and initially they blend like chalk and cheese until she gets to know the man behind the pretentious facade. Originally produced for British television, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries: A Great Deliverance was aired in the United States as part of the PBS anthology series Mystery! ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I liked this two part episode. It is a Master Piece Theater Production hosted by the great Diana Rigg. This story is written by the American authoress Elizabeth George who does a good job with the British Mystery genre. I thought this story had more cross over appeal for both American and UK viewers. The story follows a more traditional murder mystery in a small town in England with its eccentric characters and "we're not talking to outsiders" townspeople. who seem to go out of their way not to help the investigators solve the case. The dynamic between the two principle actors (Parker and Small) is well drawn out as well. In addition, good locations enhance the tale told herein. My Grade: B+ Marc L. Seattle, WA

We did not get a replacement disc and no longer want this movie. I cannot get it off our cue. Can you help?

Start here. This is the first of the Inspector Lynley mysteries, in which we meet two very different detectives, explore a charming part of Yorkshire, and work through a complicated mystery. Since this is the first episode in the long-running series, there's more set-up and character development than usual. So part of the initial mystery is figuring out who these two people are. If you're impatient with the character development, don't give up on the series for that reason. If you've seen and loved other episodes in the series, you'll enjoy this introduction to two great characters.
