While practically everyone is aware of the fact that birds fly south for the winter, and return home in the spring, few are aware of just how arduous the journey can be. Jacques Perrin, a noted actor and film producer in his native France, decided to document this process, using flocks of birds who had been trained to ignore the distractions of his camera crew, and employing a variety of state-of-the-art technology to capture as unobtrusively as possible the flight paths of different birds from around the globe. The result was Winged Migration, a visually dazzling documentary that records the flight of dozens of different birds as they follow their navigational instincts and make the taxing journey to more temperate climates in the fall, all chronicled without the use of narration. The first directorial effort for Perrin, Winged Migration received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is totally different from March of the Penguins (I saw someone mention that movie in relation to this) - this film is shot from the perspective of 'one of the birds' and you feel as if you are flying along with them as they travel. It does not follow one group of birds but rather many different kinds all over the globe, in separate shots. It is set to music for much of the time and is narrated here and there (with information about the birds you're viewing and their migration patterns occasionally displayed for a brief moment). Some will find it boring, but if you love nature shows (like National Geographic and Discovery Channel show) and you want to view the birds in a way you never have before, being able to see the wind flowing through their feathers as they fly, so close you feel you could touch their beaks if you wanted to, this film will amaze you. The photography is fantastic and it's artful and beautiful to watch.

IF a one-world gov't was a good idea - not saying that it is, as Lloyd Bridges did ("Sea Hunt," father of Jeff and Beau Bridges), every world leader and head of any $100M corporation should be required to watch this beautiful and entertaining and ambitious film and then write a 5,000 word essay on what they saw. 500 people worked on it over 4-years. In Blu-Ray and surround it plays in your living room like an IMAX movie. It provides a wonderful better-than-Nat-Geo perspective on our place in the world, our effect on the world, and what our effect on the world should be. Instead we build zillion-$ fighters nobody but multi-national corporations' CEO's need - these comments from a southern conservative. This is not a documentary; the birds are actors. But the project, monitored by all the wildlife groups, is stunning.

I fell in love with this movie. It was amazing to follow these birds in their Migration two times a year. To see the ones that make it back is even more of a miracle .They have so many challeges for their survival today.I would like to see more of these kinds of movies being made.
